This is a kind of tour that you can personally design.
Our Driver will be waiting for you at the pier as you disembark the ship holding a sign with your name on. After 1 hour drive we will arrive in Orvieto, a gorgeous medieval small town, famous for its Cathedral. In 1263-64 a Boemian priest, Peter from Prague, went to Rome to better understand the miracle of Transubstantiation.
Coming back from Rome, he stopped in Bolsena to celebrate a mass and he saw some blood stilling from the Holy Host. The Pope Urbano IV was in Orvieto that period and decided to transfer the Holy Linen from Bolsena to Orvieto. He decided also to create the “Corpus Domini” day, one of the most important day of Christianity. The day 13th of November 1290 Pope Nicolò IV put the first stone of the new church. The works continued for about three centuries and the first architect was Arnolfo di Cambio.
The interior of the cathedral is simple and austere. To the transept is located a wonderful organ, one of the biggest in Italy. The most important work of art of the cathedral is the reliquary of the Holy Linen of Bolsena. There are also decorations of the miracle of Bolsena and life of Christ.
The town is also famous for its colourful ceramics and its crisp white wine.
This tour allows you to explore 3000 years of history by following the ancient passageways, tunnels, stairs and hidden rooms. Another important stop is St. Patrick’s well. Built on the orders of Pope Clement VII who sought refuge here during the sacking of Rome, this 203 feet deep well boasts double spiralled staircases for easier access to the water.
After the first part of the day spent in this enchanting location, you will be’ driver then towards Civita Di Bagnoregio, a miracle of the Nature. With only 25-50 inhabitants it resembles a ghost town. Here you can stroll the narrow streets and marvel at the existence of a place where time stopped several hundreds of years ago.
On the return to Civitavecchia stop and view a spectacular panorama of Lake Bolsena from Montefiasacone town and visit the church of S. Flaviano where the founder of wine est est est is buried!!! We can substitute Orvieto with a visit of Tuscania instead or Tarquinia!!!!! The tour ends at 5.30pm at the cruise terminal. Note that it normally takes 90 minutes to get back.
